6. TALKING TO YOUR PATIENT
Use Lay Terms

Use terms that will be understandable to the patient. Use "gum" for "gingiva," "lower jaw" for "mandible," "a lot of bone loss" for "deleted ridge."

When I want the patient to close their mouth I say "slowly close." I don't say "close slowly" because they will close before I say "slowly." I never tell the patient to "bite" down. "Close" and "bite" are two different terms to the patient.

Which do you think has a more potent meaning for the patient: "big teeth" or "big smile?" Which term you use will depend upon the image you want to implant.
